What is Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine?
Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine is a board certified subspecialty. Physicians who practice this subspecialty complete a residency in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine or Family Practice. After residency , an additional three years of training is undertaken to manage the unique medical, physical, biologic, psychologic and social changes and challenges that occur during the adolescent and young adult stage of life.
At Evolved Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, we strive to create a therapeutic partnership with our patients. We practice a Functional or Root Cause approach to medicine and treat the patient as a whole - a distinct departure from the traditional disease- centered approach to traditional medical practice. We carefully examine each patient's unique history and combine that knowledge with the genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that can influence long term health. Patients can expect an initial consultation to be 90 -120 minutes in length in order to obtain this important and often life changing information. Many issues can be treated with lifetstyle , dietary change, " food as medicine" and use of nutraceuticals while judiciously incorporating pharmaceuticals as necessary. This patient centered approach supports the unique expression of health for each individual.
